Health & Care:

The Peterbald’s coat is one of its most distinctive features, varying widely from completely hairless to a very short, fine, velvety layer, or a sparse “brush” coat. Because the skin is exposed in hairless varieties, it should be kept clean and protected from extreme temperatures or direct sunlight. Grooming is generally minimal compared with long-haired breeds, but occasional gentle wiping or bathing with a mild, cat-safe shampoo helps maintain skin health.

Hygiene

Full baths may be needed regularly—every 2–4 weeks—using a gentle, cat-safe shampoo to remove oils and keep the skin healthy.

Nails should be trimmed every 2–3 weeks with a proper cat nail clipper to prevent overgrowth and discomfort.

Teeth should be brushed 2–3 times per week using a cat toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste—ask a vet to demonstrate proper technique if you’ve never done this before.

Ears should be checked weekly and cleaned gently with a cotton pad or a vet-recommended solution as needed, as hairless skin and open ears can accumulate dirt or oils more quickly than in furred cats.

Common Health Issues

Peterbalds are generally healthy, but like all hairless or lightly coated breeds, they can be prone to specific conditions. Skin issues such as dryness, irritation, or sunburn are more common due to their exposed skin. They may also be sensitive to temperature extremes, requiring a warm indoor environment and protection from cold drafts. Dental issues, including periodontal disease, can occur if oral hygiene is neglected. Some Peterbalds may be prone to hereditary conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), so regular veterinary checkups and preventive care are essential to ensure a long, healthy life.
