Breed Guide
Selkirk Rex
General InformationThe Selkirk Rex is a playful, affectionate, and charming breed, instantly recognizable by its curly coat and teddy bear-like appearance. Known for its friendly and easygoing temperament, the Selkirk Rex enjoys interacting with family members, playing with toys, and exploring its environment. This breed adapts well to households with children and other pets, making it a versatile and lovable companion. |
Physical:

Selkirk Rex cats have a medium-to-large, muscular body with a broad chest and rounded features. Their most distinctive trait is their curly or wavy coat, which can be short or long. They have a round head, prominent cheekbones, and large, expressive eyes. True Selkirk Rex cats are recognized by their plush, curly fur and soft, rounded ears that complement their teddy bear appearance.
Personality:
Selkirk Rex cats are affectionate, playful, and highly social, often seeking the company of their human family members throughout the day. They are intelligent and curious, enjoying interactive toys, puzzle feeders, climbing structures, and games that challenge their minds. Despite their playful energy, they are gentle and calm, making them suitable for households with young children or elderly family members. Selkirk Rex cats are known for their adaptability, thriving both in busy homes and quieter settings, and they usually integrate well with other pets. Their combination of friendliness, intelligence, and soft, approachable nature makes them both entertaining and comforting companions.
Health & Care:
The Selkirk Rex’s signature curly coat requires regular brushing to prevent mats and tangles, especially for long-haired varieties. Short-haired Selkirk Rex cats are easier to groom but still benefit from weekly brushing to maintain their unique texture and reduce shedding.
Hygiene
Occasional baths using a mild, cat-safe shampoo help keep the coat clean, particularly for long-haired varieties, but daily bathing is unnecessary.
Nails should be trimmed every 2–3 weeks with a proper cat nail clipper.
Teeth should be brushed 2–3 times per week using a cat toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste—ask a vet to demonstrate proper technique if you’ve never done this before.
Ears should be checked weekly and cleaned gently with a cotton pad or a vet-recommended solution as needed.
Common Health IssuesSelkirk Rex cats are generally healthy but may be prone to polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and hip dysplasia. Regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, and careful breeding practices help maintain their health. Their unique curly coat can sometimes hide skin issues, so monitoring during grooming is recommended. |
History:
Origin
The Selkirk Rex originated in the United States in the 1980s when a curly-coated kitten was discovered in Montana. Breeders developed the breed by crossing the curly kitten with other pedigreed cats to preserve its unique coat while maintaining a friendly temperament. Today, Selkirk Rex cats are appreciated worldwide for their playful, affectionate nature and striking curly appearance.
