Breed Guide

Minuet (Napoleon)

General Information

The Minuet, also known as the Napoleon, is a charming hybrid breed combining the sweet temperament of the Persian with the playful energy of the Munchkin. Renowned for its short legs and round, expressive face, the Minuet is affectionate, social, and highly adaptable to family life. Despite its smaller stature, this breed is lively, curious, and enjoys interactive play, making it an engaging companion. Minuets thrive in loving households where they receive attention and gentle interaction, and they are typically good with children, other cats, and calm dogs.

Physical:

The Minuet is instantly recognizable by its short legs, inherited from the Munchkin, combined with a round, Persian-like face. Its body is compact, sturdy, and well-proportioned, with a medium to long torso and a soft, rounded chest. The head is broad with large, round eyes that can come in a variety of colors, small nose, and full cheeks. Ears are small to medium, rounded at the tips, and set wide apart. The coat can be medium to long, dense, and plush, appearing in virtually all colors and patterns. A true Minuet is distinguished by the combination of its short legs, Persian-inspired facial features, and well-balanced body, moving gracefully despite its unique stature.

Personality:

The Minuet is affectionate, gentle, and extremely people-oriented, often seeking out lap time and companionship. Playful yet calm, they enjoy interactive games and puzzle toys but are not overly hyperactive. Minuets are intelligent and curious, showing interest in their surroundings while forming strong bonds with their family members. They tend to be friendly with children, other cats, and calm dogs, making them excellent family pets. Despite their sociable nature, they can be slightly reserved with strangers until they feel comfortable, preferring the security of familiar faces and routines.

Health & Care:

The Minuet has a medium to long coat that is soft, dense, and plush, requiring regular grooming to prevent tangles and mats. Shorter-haired Minuets need only occasional brushing, while longer-haired varieties benefit from brushing 2–3 times per week. Shedding is moderate, and proper grooming helps maintain the coat’s silky texture and keeps the cat comfortable and looking tidy.

Hygiene

Full baths are rarely needed and only when the cat is visibly dirty, using a mild, cat-safe shampoo.

Nails should be trimmed every 2–3 weeks with a proper cat nail clipper; if unsure, a veterinarian or professional groomer can assist.

Teeth should be brushed 2–3 times per week using a cat toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste—ask a vet to demonstrate proper technique if you’ve never done this before.

Ears should be checked weekly and cleaned gently with a cotton pad or a vet-recommended solution as needed.

Common Health Issues

The Minuet can be prone to certain breed-related issues. Short legs may occasionally lead to spinal or joint stress, though responsibly bred Minuets usually move comfortably. Additionally, they may inherit Persian-related concerns such as polycystic kidney disease (PKD) or respiratory sensitivity due to their slightly flattened facial structure. Regular veterinary checkups, a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight help prevent complications and ensure a long, active life.

History:

Origin

The Minuet, also known as the Napoleon, was developed in the United States in the late 20th century by crossing Persians with Munchkins. Breeders aimed to create a cat that combined the Persian’s gentle, affectionate nature and plush coat with the Munchkin’s playful energy and short legs. Recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA) in 2004, the Minuet has quickly gained popularity for its adorable appearance, sociable temperament, and suitability as a family companion.
