Cornish Rex

General Information

The Cornish Rex is a distinctive breed known for its slender, athletic body and soft, wavy coat. Highly intelligent, playful, and energetic, Cornish Rex cats are extremely social and enjoy interacting with their families. Physical:

Cornish Rex cats have a slim, muscular, and athletic build with long, elegant limbs and a graceful posture. Their heads are slightly oval with high cheekbones, large ears set high on the head, and oval or almond-shaped eyes that are expressive and alert. The coat is very short, soft, and wavy, lying close to the body, giving the cat a unique velvet-like texture. A true Cornish Rex will combine the slender, elegant frame with the distinctive rippled coat and large, prominent ears.

Cornish Rex cats are playful, energetic, and highly intelligent. They are extremely social and thrive on interaction with their families, often following their owners from room to room. Curious and mischievous, they enjoy climbing, exploring, and engaging in interactive games that challenge their minds. Health & Care:

Their delicate, short, wavy coat requires very little grooming. Weekly gentle brushing is usually enough to remove loose hairs and maintain the coat’s soft, velvety texture, keeping it healthy and smooth.

Hygiene

Full baths are rarely necessary, only when the cat is visibly dirty, using a cat-friendly shampoo.

Nails should be trimmed every 2–3 weeks with a proper cat nail clipper; if you’re unsure, a veterinarian or professional groomer can assist.

Their teeth should be brushed 2–3 times per week using a cat toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste—ask a vet to demonstrate proper technique if you’ve never done this before.

Ears should be checked weekly and cleaned gently with a cotton pad or a vet-recommended solution as needed.

Common Health Issues

Cornish Rex cats are generally healthy with no widely reported breed-specific genetic issues. Regular veterinary care, vaccinations, and parasite prevention are important. Maintaining a balanced diet and moderate exercise helps prevent obesity.

The Cornish Rex originated in Cornwall, England, in the 1950s when a single wavy-coated kitten named “Kallibunker” was born to a domestic cat. Breeders recognized its unique curly coat and elegant, slender body, developing the breed through careful breeding programs. Today, the Cornish Rex is celebrated for its distinctive appearance, playful personality, and affectionate, social nature.
