Chausie

General Information

The Chausie is a rare hybrid breed developed from crosses between domestic cats and the wild jungle cat (Felis chaus). Athletic and striking in appearance, they are tall, long-bodied cats with lean muscles and large, expressive ears. Highly active and intelligent, Chausies thrive on mental stimulation and interactive play, often forming strong bonds with their families while maintaining a streak of independence. Their adventurous spirit and social nature make them engaging companions for experienced cat owners who can provide plenty of space and enrichment.

Physical:

Chausies are large, athletic cats with a long, lean, and powerful build that reflects their wild ancestry. They have a deep chest, long legs, and a graceful yet muscular frame, giving them an almost “wildcat” silhouette. Their heads are slightly wedge-shaped with high cheekbones, broad muzzles, and large, upright ears that are often tufted at the tips. Eyes are medium to large, almond-shaped, and usually gold or hazel, though green is also possible. Their short, dense coat lies close to the body and typically appears in solid black, black grizzle (a unique ticked pattern from the jungle cat), or brown ticked tabby. A true Chausie will have a tall, athletic body, prominent ears, and the rare grizzled coat pattern that clearly sets it apart from similar-looking domestic breeds.

Personality:

Chausie cats are energetic, intelligent, and highly social. They are playful and adventurous, often enjoying climbing, exploring, and interactive games that challenge their minds and bodies. While they form strong bonds with their families, they retain an independent streak and may not be as openly affectionate as some other breeds. Chausies thrive in active households that can provide stimulation and companionship, and their lively, curious nature makes them fascinating companions for owners who appreciate a more spirited, engaging cat.

Health & Care:

Chausie cats have a short, dense coat that is low-maintenance and easy to care for. Weekly brushing is usually enough to remove loose hairs and keep their coat sleek and healthy.

Hygiene

Full baths are rarely necessary, only when the cat is visibly dirty, using a cat-friendly shampoo.

Nails should be trimmed every 2–3 weeks with a proper cat nail clipper; if you’re unsure, a veterinarian or professional groomer can assist.

Their teeth should be brushed 2–3 times per week using a cat toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste—ask a vet to demonstrate proper technique if you’ve never done this before.

Ears should be checked weekly and cleaned gently with a cotton pad or a vet-recommended solution as needed.

Common Health Issues

Chausie cats are generally healthy, but as an active hybrid breed they may be more prone to digestive sensitivities, particularly food intolerances. Regular veterinary care, vaccinations, and parasite prevention are essential. A high-protein diet and plenty of exercise help maintain their lean, muscular build and prevent obesity.
