Breed Guide
Chartreux
General InformationThe Chartreux is a rare, naturally occurring breed from France, known for its robust build, plush blue-gray coat, and striking copper or gold eyes. Gentle and intelligent, Chartreux cats are highly adaptable, forming strong bonds with their families while maintaining a quiet and calm demeanor. Their calm temperament and affectionate nature make them excellent companions for households of all sizes. |
Physical:

Chartreux cats are medium to large, muscular, and well-proportioned. They have a rounded, broad head with full cheeks, slightly rounded ears, and large, expressive copper or gold eyes. Their short, dense, woolly coat is a uniform slate-blue color with a silvery sheen. The tail is thick at the base and tapers slightly toward a rounded tip. A true Chartreux will have a firm, muscular build, striking eye color, and a plush, soft coat that feels almost like velvet.
Personality:
Chartreux cats are gentle, affectionate, and intelligent. They are playful but not hyperactive, often enjoying interactive toys and climbing structures. While social and devoted to their families, they are not overly demanding and can entertain themselves if needed. Their quiet, soft voice and calm demeanor make them ideal for households seeking a loving but low-key companion.
Health & Care:
Chartreux cats have a short, dense coat that requires minimal grooming. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient to remove loose hairs and maintain the coat’s soft, plush texture.
Hygiene
Full baths are rarely necessary, only when the cat is visibly dirty, using a cat-friendly shampoo.
Nails should be trimmed every 2–3 weeks with a proper cat nail clipper; if you’re unsure, a veterinarian or professional groomer can assist.
Their teeth should be brushed 2–3 times per week using a cat toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste—ask a vet to demonstrate proper technique if you’ve never done this before.
Ears should be checked weekly and cleaned gently with a cotton pad or a vet-recommended solution as needed.
Common Health IssuesChartreux cats are generally healthy with no widely reported breed-specific genetic issues. Regular veterinary care, vaccinations, and parasite prevention are important. Maintaining a balanced diet and moderate exercise helps prevent obesity. Common feline health concerns such as dental disease, urinary tract issues, and ear infections should be monitored. |
